The Convent, 2008
‘The Convent’ is a body of work that explores many issues and questions which are typical of modern society and represents a time of social, spiritual and economic uncertainty. Taken in an abandoned Convent in Northern Ireland, the derelict building maintains many forgotten remnants adept at maintaining the ambience of the buildings previous function. It seems indicative of the modern world, that when clearing it out, many religious symbols were left behind.
Within the shadows, and otherwise empty shelves I found myself faced with threads of my own culture. The images prompt the viewer to address the state of their own. In a world that appears to place high values in materialistic goods and social media, how are today’s societies, communities and families held together? ‘Is it better for a man to gain the world but to lose his soul?’
