"Imagine having the resources to build something that can dramatically alter the lives of people, communities, even nations. Conversely, imagine an unassuming man coming to you and asking what you could build to change many lives,
of the people in your community or even your nation. Imagine the possibilities. That’s what this book is about. It’s about elds of dreams, and about the people who were asked to imagine what could be built upon those elds to improve the lives of people, and of the people who come and till those elds and are part of that change. It’s a visual and narrative story of Charles Francis “Chuck” Feeney and The Atlantic Philanthropies and what literally laying the foundations for change means for people and nations..."
Extract from the Foreword by CHRISTOPHER G. OECHSLI, President and Chief Executive Of cer, The Atlantic Philanthropies.
I created this piece (below) as part of a commission in the Queens library Belfast.
Instead of creating portraits, I decided to present the many lives that have been changed by investment in Queens Library through wear and tear of the books. Each dog ear, stain, and left-behind book mark represents a person. A person who you can nearly 'imagine the possibilities' and opportunities they have had simply by having access to essential books. Showing wear and tear in this positive light is evidence that resources are being used, and that having access to facilities have provided solid foundations for the local community to build their future from. These images were created using only the resources and equipment available in the library to show the endless possibilties that lie within the library walls.
